I’ve had umpteen discussions recently with entrepreneurs, execs and employees in transition or in frustration. Most are disgruuntled and seeking higher levels of challenge, free expression, satisfaction and success. The Gallup organization cites that 55% of employees are disengaged and 20% are actively disengaged with a majority of workers actively seeking other opportunities.

When you’re feeling the itch to change something in your career and you don’t know exactly what’s wrong, but you know you’re not happy; then it’s time to uplevel your life and your work. You’re working at a lower level than your capacity. When there’s no more personal or professional growth left in your work, then it’s time to move on to another challenge. If you’re feeling flustered, frustrated or ready to pull your hair out or somebody else’s hair, then you’re on the edge and need to jump up another level to function more in your place of purpose and brilliance and less at your level of competence or routine.

There are several levels at which we operate: inability, ability, talent and brilliance. The level of inability are the areas in which you don’t do well or where you don’t necessarily have an aptitude or competency. You don’t necessarily have any interest in doing these types of things. For me this area is plumbing, taxes and car repair. These areas are better off out-sourced to give somebody else a job who commands that ability.

Your level of ability are areas you can do, but they don’t give you joy and it seems like lackluster busy work. It smacks of mediocrity and you’d be better off out-sourcing these things as well. Housekeeping, cooking or landscaping may be one of your areas.  Or you may revel in gourmet cooking and that is your place of brilliance – it’s all very individual. If you’re working at this level, it seems beneath your talents and you’d get bored or frustrated easily. You may find yourself saying “this is stupid” one too many times.

Your level of talent is where you likely excel, earn income, get praise for what you’re doing and are admired by colleagues, family and friends for what you do. They likely want you to stay at this level because it feels safe and comfortable for them and they like you there. It’s a secure feeling because you know what you’re doing and you’re good at it. Although you may be getting itchy to do something else. You start to feel confined and the chafing of the golden handcuffs or maybe trapped in the lifestyle, but not feeling the joy any more for what you do or who you’re doing it for. You don’t want to lose what you’ve already accomplished in your career, but you’re not happy.

Many stand at the edge of this terror trigger and lose their courage to jump up to the next level of brilliance due to the unknown. Others may not want you to jump because they’re afraid for you. Our subconscious is built on security, survival and safety. Many back down off the ledge and live in their level of talent, a little discontent, a little dull ache for more, feeling “it’s not great, but it’s not that bad – I don’t hate it and I’m better off than most – I should be happy.”

We can start out in a business or a job that fits our place of brilliance at first, but as we learn and grow, it offers less challenge, personal and professional growth and it shrinks down to our levels of talent or ability. Think about Oprah when she decided to start her magazine in addition to her wildly successful talk show and then decided to shut down her show to start her own network. You can bet her first TV show was in her place of brilliance for her capacity at that time and then she expanded her capacity and the show just wasn’t big enough to contain her dream and her brilliance and her purpose. By all accounts, her level of ability far surpasses most mere mortal’s dreams of brilliance. It’s all very personal.

Your purposeful place of brilliance is where you truly shine. It’s exhilarating, joyful, happy and it feels right. It’s where you dreams are made. You are usually richly rewarded for it. It’s where purpose, passion and profits reside. My purpose is to help you find yours at www.YourRealPurpose.com. My mission is to help you identify and clarify your mission. Let me know how I can help you uplevel your work and your life to your place of purpose and brilliance – Gail@GailHahn.com.

 Cheers To Your FUNomenal Success!

There are so many people who don’t really know when they are in or out of alignment. It’s the same as your car. If you’re out of alignment, things don’t feel right. You keep going, but it’s a little shaky, things don’t run smoothly and you may hear rumblings around you. Some of us know when something isn’t quite right and still others may not even recognize when things are in perfectly in place and on purpose. They don’t know when to celebrate that they’re doing it just how they are meant to be doing it.

That’s why the Hot 100 List and the Ideal Day exercises are so critically important. To help you do a gap analysis and see what you wanted in your life and when you have it, you need to celebrate victory. Sometimes we need some hints on how we’re doing in life just as we had or have performance evaluations from a former or current job. As entrepreneurs, we don’t get the official evaluations in our work – our bank accounts can attest to how we’re doing, but it doesn’t cover all the bases.

So I submit to you some hints on what living a purposeful  life looks like. How it feels and what are the signs of living in alignment with your life purpose and doing your calling. It may be something you aspire to do, be, have or feel, or it may be showing you it’s time to celebrate your success of living on purpose.

You know you’re living your life purpose when…

  1. You can’t turn off your brain with all the ideas swirling around on how to implement your plan
  2. You are excited to wake up each morning and get to your life’s work
  3. You feel happy, optimistic, exuberant and excited about life and your future
  4. You dwell in the realm of possibility and let nothing stop you from your goals and dreams
  5. You may have a lower tolerance for people who aren’t living on purpose, you want to surround yourself with other like-minded people living out their purpose and potential
  6. You don’t let the how’s stop you – you know your why and your what and everything else is just noise
  7. You feel lucky to live the life you do
  8. You can’t believe you actually get paid to have so much fun and just do what comes naturally
  9. You enjoy fun in your life and your sense of humor is very much intact – you’re happy
  10. You feel fulfilled, happy and perhaps not satisfied because there is more to do, bigger plans to implement and more people to help serve -you’re hungry to help others find what you’ve found
  11. Your bank account reflects your purposeful livelihood and you attract the right clients
  12. You attract the right people into your life and the right opportunities at the right time
  13. Your life is in flow at all levels personally and professionally
  14. You’re living your dreams and doing things you never thought possible in your early years
  15. You wonder why you didn’t take this step, know this, or learn this sooner  – you want to share it all
  16. You’ve reached your point of enoughness and want to give away to others in need
  17. You’re living your life fully expressed and you get paid handsomely for using your knowledge, skills and abilities to the best of your ability
  18. You feel valued, wanted and in demand for your work – you’ve built a following of fans and advocates who you value just as much as they value you
  19. You’ve cut ties with those who don’t get it or who don’t support you in your dreams, those negative people who don’t have your best interest in their heart
  20. You’re proud of the efforts, successes and achievements of others, not jealous or envious of them
  21. You’re not trading your time for money – you’ve got passive income flowing in from your businesses and your investments
  22. You’re not ever bored
  23. Your voice is excited, you speak with power and confidence and enthusiasm  – you love communicating your message to the world in various channels
  24. You admire your friends and colleagues and support what they do as they do with you
  25. The line is blurred between work and play – it’s just your life and what you do – it runs together
  26. When you’re working you’re in flow, the hours don’t matter, you don’t seek breaks and there is not official quitting time – when you’re done or tired or finished with a project or find a stopping point, you stop, otherwise you just keep going until you feel like stopping
  27. There is no mindset of part-time work or full-time work, it’s just life and you do your life
  28. You do your work for the sake of serving or doing what you do, you don’t do it for the paycheck – the money is a side effect of doing what you were born to do and put here to do
  29. You get to live your life on your own terms
  30. You wake up and decide what you want to do for the day and how you spend your time exactly how you want to spend your time and with whom
  31. You have challenges, but your vision, mission and purpose is much bigger than any challenge  – your purpose is waaaaay bigger than anything put in its way
  32. You’re making rich memories for you and your family and friends – you are giving away more and tipping more and don’t’ worry about the cash flow – it flows in and out effortlessly
  33. Your relationships are healthy at all levels, you enjoy time for yourself and with loved ones – there is time to go around when you’re not in struggle
  34. Your life just works better all the way around
  35. You are proud of what you do, who you are and how you live and what you have and take pride in your actions and how you serve.

So if you can check off more than a few of these items, you deserve a little celebration of living your life on purpose and consciously choosing your calling. If you need some more insight on getting it all together and turbo-charging your calling, be on our call: Cracking the Code to Your Calling, Living Your Life Purpose on 2 February. After working with many entrepreneurs, employees and others out of alignment with their life purpose and having experienced it myself from time to time; I decided to share in the Jeff Foxworthy fashion, how you know if you’re not in sync with your calling.

  1. You’re tired all the time event when you get enough sleep
  2. Waking up is hard to do – you hit the snooze button a few too many times
  3. You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’ – not in the mood for that or anything – your’e just blah, flatlined
  4. You or your friends notice your vocal tone has flatlined – there’s no excitement or optimism in it
  5. You don’t feel excited about life or your’e not optimistic about the future
  6. You can’t wait to leave your job each day and get home or can’t wait for the weekend
  7. You collect stuff, have too much stuff or spend too much money on stuff to fill the emptiness inside you
  8. You eat or drink too much, stuff your face with too much stuff to again fill the empty hole inside
  9. You take too many vacations to get away – nothing wrong with vacations, I’m a big fan of them – it’s all in the mindset of wanting to go someplace, explore, recharge, refresh or are you running away to escape from your life or are you getting away to add to your life – are you hiding out or living large?
  10. You hear the words “this is stupid”, “This is insane”, “They should do….” coming out of your mouth way too often
  11. You catch yourself citing all the ways your boss or your organization “should” be doing their work
  12. You are shoulding way too much on yourself and others in your personal or professional life
  13. You’re not making the income you so richly deserve and desire
  14. You feel like somebody or something is holding you back – you could be more, achieve more, do more
  15. You’re mentally and emotionally exhausted all the time – your work doesn’t charge you up, it drains you
  16. You dread Mondays or whatever day of the week is your Monday – you have lower energy on Monday than on Friday
  17. You keep wishing something would happen in your life to make you happy
  18. You’ve been ‘retired’ on the job for the past umpteen years, but you keep showing up for work each day
  19. You just clock in and clock out – you’re physically at work, but mentally you’ve checked out – you only do what they ask of you and not one thing more
  20. You’ve lost the fun in your life and your sense of humor is waning
  21. You’re more of a specatator in life rather than a participant
  22. You’re living in the future too much and not experiencing this moment right now
  23. You feel like you’ve got something to contribute, but not sure what, why or how
  24. You’re feeling stuck and don’t know how to get out or move forward
  25. You lack initiative and drive to do better or do more or serve more
  26. You look forward to your 10-minute break or you live for your lunch hour and quitting time
  27. You wait until you leave your job to lead your life
  28. You only do your job for the paycheck and the money is your only reward
  29. You wear a uniform or a nametag and hate it
  30. You wear an embarrassing costume and you’re not on stage as a performer
  31. You’re constantly being told what to do by incompetent people or somebody in high school as your boss
  32. You’re not working with people you like, trust, are proud to be around
  33. You’re not feeling proud of what you do for a living or taking pride in yourself, your image, your life
  34. You’re not happy and you’re not sure how to fix it or where to turn
  35. You know you need help to get your act together and are to fearful to quit your job or make a change or ask for help

So there you have the tip of the iceburg for starters. If you recognized yourself in any of those scenarios, then you may not be working in alignment with your life purpose. And if you have no idea of what your life purpose is, then you’re in the right place. My colleague Margaret and I have put together an overview in our free teleclass on how to crack the code to your calling. It’s all in your personal DNA – we just help you see it and show you how to use it to your benefit and the benefit of the world.

Join us on 2 February for our free call to show you how easy it is to get back on the right track and live in alignment with your life purpose. We’re your guides to your goals. More details are forthcoming  on the Facebook Group, The Energized Entrepreneur. See you then!
